Quick Answer:

Yes — most rideshare and delivery gig workers can use the federal “no tax on tips” deduction. Treasury’s list of tipped occupations includes Taxi and Rideshare Drivers and Chauffeurs (code 802) and Goods Delivery People (code 804). You can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips per year for 2025 through 2028, whether or not you itemize. For independent contractors, the deduction can’t exceed your net profit from that gig. It lowers federal income tax only — Social Security, Medicare (self-employment tax) and state taxes still apply.

The deduction is open to both employees and self-employed individuals who receive qualified tips in an occupation that “customarily and regularly” received tips on or before December 31, 2024. Treasury published that list in the Federal Register on September 22, 2025. In its Transportation and Delivery group, the list includes:

App names in the right-hand column are our examples of where this work usually happens; the IRS list itself names occupations, not companies. What matters is the work you actually do when you receive the tip.

The tax it does not remove: this is an income tax deduction, not an exclusion. Tips are still subject to Social Security and Medicare tax, and independent contractors still owe self-employment tax on their net earnings. State income tax treatment depends on your state.

How Much Could You Save? A Worked Example

Take a full-time delivery driver (an independent contractor, single filer) whose app statements show $9,000 in customer tips for the year and whose net profit after vehicle expenses is $30,000. Because $9,000 is less than both the $25,000 cap and the $30,000 net profit, the full $9,000 is deductible.

ItemWithout the tips deductionWith the tips deduction
Net profit from deliveries$30,000$30,000
Tips deducted$0$9,000
Income tax on the tip portion at a 12% rateabout $1,080$0
Self-employment tax on the $9,000still owedstill owed

Illustration only: the 12% rate is used to show the mechanics; your actual saving depends on your bracket, other income, credits and the self-employment tax deduction. The point: for many full-time drivers, the deduction is worth hundreds to more than a thousand dollars a year in federal income tax.

What Gig Workers Should Track Now for 2026

  1. Separate tips from base pay. Download weekly or monthly earnings statements that show customer tips on their own line. The deduction applies only to tips, not to delivery fees, promotions or peak pay.
  2. Save year-end tax forms. New Form W-2, Form 1099-NEC and Form 4137 reporting for qualified tips begins with 2026. For 2025, the IRS allowed transition relief, so many platforms sent separate statements instead.
  3. Record cash tips yourself. Keep a simple log with the date, amount and app. The IRS tip recordkeeping page explains what records to keep.
  4. Keep paying estimated taxes. Self-employment tax still applies to every dollar of net earnings, tips included.
  5. Check your income. If your household MAGI is near $150,000 (single) or $300,000 (joint), part of the deduction may phase out.

How to Claim It

The deduction is claimed on the new Schedule 1-A filed with Form 1040, in the section for qualified tips. Tax software asks for your tipped occupation and the tip amount. If you used a tax preparer for your 2025 return, confirm the deduction was claimed — if it was missed, you can file an amended return.
