DebtRoute Verdict — 4.4/5 Achieve stands out for one specific reason: their direct creditor payoff feature — they send loan proceeds directly to your credit card companies and give you a rate discount for doing so. This eliminates the #1 failure mode of debt consolidation (spending the money instead of paying off cards). For borrowers with 560+ credit serious about eliminating credit card debt, Achieve is one of our top three recommendations alongside LendingTree and Upstart.

The Direct Creditor Payoff Advantage

The #1 reason debt consolidation fails: borrowers receive the loan funds, don’t pay off their credit cards, and end up with both a personal loan AND credit card debt. Achieve fixes this structurally.

When you choose direct creditor payoff, Achieve sends proceeds directly to each credit card company. Two benefits: (1) You cannot accidentally spend the money, and (2) Achieve provides a rate discount when at least 85% of the loan goes directly to creditors. Achieve doesn’t publish the size of this discount on its own; it says borrowers can lower their rate by up to 4% using its three rate discounts combined (co-borrower, direct pay and retirement savings). Any remaining funds after payoffs are deposited to your bank account.

FAQ

What credit score do I need for Achieve?
Achieve says the minimum credit score for its personal loans is 560, or 660 for debt consolidation loans of $35,000 or more. Lower scores generally mean higher APRs, and your rate depends on your full application. If you don’t qualify, compare other lenders or talk to a nonprofit credit counselor about a debt management plan. Checking your rate uses a soft pull.Source: Achieve — Personal Loans (eligibility and rates)
Is Achieve the same as FreedomPlus?
Yes. Yes. FreedomPlus was rebranded as Achieve Personal Loans in December 2022, so older reviews may still say FreedomPlus. Achieve launched in 2022, building on the 20-year history of Freedom Financial Network, and Freedom Debt Relief is a subsidiary of Achieve.Source: Achieve — FreedomPlus rebrand announcement
How does the direct creditor payoff work?
You provide Achieve with your creditor account numbers and payoff amounts. Achieve sends funds directly to each creditor within 1–3 business days of loan closing. You receive a rate discount for choosing this option. Any remaining funds after payoffs are deposited to your bank account. You then make fixed monthly payments to Achieve for the loan term.
